After trekking up to the top of the Kuliouou Ridge trail, we headed back to Sandy Beach on the south side of Oahu. I could happily take pics of the people riding this massive shorebreak all day. It was hard editing down my favorite photos. After standing on the shore for awhile, I went out into the water myself and captured by far the best pic inside a wave of my life (so far). After breakfast, we headed over to Diamond Head- planning on walking to the top. Little did we know that Diamond Head on a Sunday is Tourist Central. The parking lot was jam packed, so people were parking a mile or more away just to get to the start of the trail. I would much rather cruise for an extra mile in the forest than on concrete, and we had also been to Diamond Head on a previous trip. My brother Jon is a Yelp master, so he found us a much better option than Tourist Town. We ended up at the Kuliouou Ridge Trail. It was much longer and more difficult than expected (it took about 90ish minutes to get to the top), but I would definitely recommend it. Getting to the top isn't easy, but view from the peak is well worth it. More importantly, it was a trail awesomely void of tourists, so it was nice and quiet. We heard the Kuliouou Valley Trail (splits off pretty close to the street) is much easier if you want a mellow, uncrowded Oahu hike. Click on any of the pictures to start a slideshow.
Today started out with a trek up the Koko Head Trail. The way to the top include an extremely steep hill and roughly 1,000 stairs. I needed to stop a bunch along the way, and made it to the top drenched in sweat and on the verge of puking. It has been a little over 3 months since I was diagnosed cancer free, and making it to the top was a proud accomplishment. I was very impressed with my mom who made it all the way up as well. A recommended activity if you visit Oahu and want a serious workout. Click on any image to start a slideshow.
Today started off with a drive along the southern coast of Oahu to Makapuu Point on the eastern side of the island. There is an old lighthouse on the point, as well as some great views of the eastern coast. After the mini-hike, we ended up on very quiet beach with tropical turquoise water where I posed as Beach Batman.
I have been on the always beautiful island of Oahu the last few days. The first group of pics are from the Waikiki area. We have watched some amazing sunsets. If you have never seen the sun disappear below the edge of the ocean, I would highly recommend it. The second group of photos are from a visit to the famous North Shore. There weren't great surfing waves to watch, just some big shore break to slam me down a few times. The 2 photos from inside the wave are from my new GoPro. Will try to get some better ones when the shore break is a little friendlier. Click on any of the photos to start a larger slideshow.
The below photos are all from Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu.
This was my first time playing with the new Sony A77. So far so fun. You can click on any of the images below to start a slideshow.
